Bison Rack Up 31 Runs In Two Game Sweep of Eastern Nazarene

Dudley, Mass. The Nichols College softball team made quick work of the Eastern Nazarene Crusaders as it swept them, 21-3 and 10-0 in five innings. The Bison improve their record to 7-6 overall and 4-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference while Eastern Nazarene is 0-16 overall and 0-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

 

In game one, Nichols jumped out to an early 7-1 lead with a three-run homerun by sophomore Lauren Lombardo (Wolcott, Conn.) in the second. The Bison erupted for 12 runs in the third inning on three hits including a grand-slam homerun by sophomore Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.), her first of the season. Eastern Nazarene added two runs in the bottom of the third on a two RBI single by Hannah Rauchfuss (Elmont, N.Y.) to make it a 19-3 game. Nichols tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take the 21-3 lead as sophomore Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, N.Y.) had two of her seven strikeouts in the fifth and final inning for her second win on the season.

 

In game two, Lombardo hit a two-run homerun in the first inning for her second of the day.  Junior Christina Hebert (Johnston, R.I.) broke the game open in the third as she had a three RBI double. After three innings, senior Lauren Person (Vernon, Conn.) had still not given up a hit as the Bison led 8-0. Nichols got its final two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by senior Tracy Cullity (Manchester, N.H.) and an RBI single by Hebert. In the fifth inning, Person had her fourth strikeout of the game which broke the school record for strikeouts in a career with 221. With the start Person also has the career games pitched record with 81.
